Structural initiatives

Arapyaú designs and strengthens structural initiatives for the country’s development.

We have a significant presence in two Brazilian biomes, where these projects grow and evolve.

The Atlantic Forest and the Amazon are biodiverse forest regions that, despite their unique characteristics, share many points of convergence.

Atlantic Forest

Where Arapyaú was born

We started our journey in the district of Serra Grande, in the municipality of Uruçuca. From there, we grew and began working at a regional scale, collaborating on the development of the southern coast of Bahia.

We strengthen local networks like the Southern Bahia Regional Development Agency (ADR) and Tabôa Community Strengthening, while promoting the conservation of cabrucas – traditional agroforestry systems for growing cocoa typical of the region.

We also work on credit initiatives with technical assistance for family farmers and small-scale producers, promoting sustainable, high-quality cocoa with greater market value.

Amazon

The largest biome in Brazil

We also view the diverse Amazons through the lens of our learnings in Bahia, believing in economic and social development aligned with sustainability. In this spirit, networks like Uma Concertação pela Amazônia and Conexão Povos da Floresta were incubated by Arapyaú, aiming for a deeper positive impact in the region.

Additionally, our work focuses on promoting the bioeconomy, emphasizing a more sustainable approach to food systems, productive chains, and forest restoration movements. There is also a strong effort to support Amazonian science, with a focus on R&D and territorial knowledge.

Innovative financial instruments, blended finance, and Payments for Environmental Services

The blended finance project provided credit to sustainable cocoa producers, initially in Southern Bahia. Considered a success, the CRA won a BNDES call for proposals, allowing its expansion into the Amazon biome as well.

We are part of the consortium that supported the development and approval of the national bioeconomy plan, and now seeks to establish sociobioeconomy hubs for Brazil’s biomes, with a special focus on the Atlantic Forest, Amazon, and Cerrado.

Based on the WOCAN standard, it is possible to measure the progress of women’s empowerment through actions carried out with female cabruca cocoa producers. This empowerment can then be sold as credits, with the value returned to the farmers themselves. This is made possible through a partnership between Arapyaú, ERA Brazil, and Tabôa.

The fund to promote regenerative and family cocoa farming in Brazil was launched in 2025. Using the blended finance model, Kawá will benefit 1,200 cocoa farmers who adopt agroforestry cultivation in southern Bahia and Pará in its first phase. This is an initiative by Arapyaú, in partnership with Violet, Tabôa Community Strengthening, and MOV Investimentos.

This sectoral movement aims to highlight the attributes of the national product, with the potential to become one of the world’s top three cocoa producers and reach strategic markets like Europe and the United States. The initiative includes training for cocoa producers and a strong focus on raising awareness about the benefits of sustainable cocoa. Learn more.

Research and education

The CT&I Pilot project aims to drive innovation to develop technological solutions that enable the sustainable use of the forest, promoting social and environmental well-being.

Supported by Arapyaú, this program, led by Iungo, Reúna, and Concertação, aims to include the Amazons in school curricula, with plans to be present in all nine states of the Legal Amazon.
